MIRI: The Chinese community has been urged to actively take part in events that promote racial unity and religious harmony in the state.

They should also be on guard against efforts to disrupt the prevailing peace and harmony among the people in the state by negatives elements, Transport Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin said.

“It is true that there is no racial and religious strife in Sarawak because the people subscribe to high tolerance and respect for each other, regardless of race, culture and religion.

“Even so, we should not take existing peace and harmony for granted. Instead, we must at all cost safeguard the peace and harmony,” he said when officiating at Miri Rainbow Chorus Society singing competition at Boulevard Shopping Mall on Sunday.

He also reminded the people to be grateful for having a good state government under Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), which always has the welfare of people of different races and religions in mind.

He cited the Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) as an example of the state government’s care for non-Islamic religions.

Commenting on the singing competition, he praised the society for organising such competition in conjunction with the Chinese New Year (CNY) celebration, saying it
helped in preserving the Chinese culture.
