MIRI: Minister of Transport Datuk Lee Kim Shin reminded the community to practise good hygiene and use face mask when visiting their friends and family this festive period, to check the spread of coronavirus.

“Not only are these steps to prevent Wuhan virus (2019-nCov), but also other illnesses such as influenza which is also affecting a lot of Malaysians,” said Lee in his address at Sarawak Miri Division Hopoh Association luncheon gathering at a local restaurant here yesterday.

For those who show symptoms such as flu or fever, Lee reminded them to seek treatment at Miri Hospital.

“Miri Hospital is ready for any case relating to the pneumonia with a special ward to quarantine patients. Of course, to successfully contain the virus from spreading locally, cooperation from the community is needed.

“Those who have returned from China must quarantine themselves for 14 days, whilst those who had travelled from other countries should self-quarantine for 10 days for their own safety and that of loved ones.”

He added that the epidemic should not break families but rather a time to show compassion, respect and to help each other as Chinese New Year is a festivity that focuses on the family.

Also present were chairman of Sarawak Miri Division Hopoh Association Chong Ah Muk, Federation of Miri Division Chinese Associations president Datuk David Goh, Temenggong Yong Vui Seng, Kapitan Jee Kee Hiong and Kapitan Chai Kuen Ming.

Education incentives for academic excellence were also presented to 80 children of members during the luncheon.

Lee pledged RM10,000 to the association’s education fund to encourage excellence in academics and co-curriculum.
